Gallup poll finds Republicans and independents doubt US election integrity ahead of midterms
A new Gallup survey has found that most independent voters and supporters of President Donald Trump's Republican Party do not believe upcoming elections in the United States will be conducted honestly, less than a month before the country's midterm elections.
The poll, released on Wednesday, showed that only 37 percent of Republicans and 35 percent of independents expressed confidence in the electoral system, compared with 63 percent of Democrats. Gallup said the figures point to a deep and historic partisan split in trust toward US elections.
The research also revealed an unusual pattern linking approval of Trump's leadership with distrust in the electoral process. Gallup noted that since Trump returned to the White House in 2025, the usual link between approving of a country's leadership and having confidence in its elections has broken down.
According to the firm, the United States is the only nation among more than 100 surveyed annually over the past 15 years to show this reversal, with people who disapprove of the current leadership expressing more trust in election integrity than those who approve of it.
Gallup said this represents a shift from 2025, when confidence in elections was slightly higher among Trump approvers, at 51 percent, than disapprovers, at 45 percent. The latest figures show that trend has reversed, with 52 percent of disapprovers now expressing confidence in US elections compared with 41 percent of approvers.
