Former American Idol contestant and church pastor convicted of murdering wife

A former Ohio music pastor who once appeared on the television talent show American Idol has been found guilty of murdering his wife.

Caleb Flynn, 40, shot Ashley Flynn twice in the back of the head while she slept at their home in Tipp City, a suburb of Dayton, Ohio, on 16 February this year. He then attempted to claim that intruders were responsible for her death.

Flynn broke down in tears in court as the jury returned its verdict, following less than three hours of deliberation.

He was also convicted on all eight additional charges brought against him, including aggravated murder and tampering with evidence. He now faces a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Closing arguments in the trial concluded on Tuesday, after eight days of testimony. During proceedings, prosecutors played a song in court that they say Flynn had written and dedicated to a woman with whom he was having an affair.

Prosecutors built their case using evidence that included police body camera recordings, along with data from Flynn's iPhone and Apple Watch showing his activity around the time of the killing.
