Powerful 7.4 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Colombia, Significant Damage Reported

A major earthquake with a magnitude of 7.4 struck western Colombia, causing widespread structural damage and leaving several people injured in multiple cities across the country. The seismic event, confirmed by the Colombian Geological Service (SGC), had its epicenter near San José del Palmar in the Chocó Department, at a depth of approximately 96 kilometers.

The tremors were felt in several urban centers, including Bogotá, Medellín, Cali, Pereira, and Manizales, resulting in reports of damaged building facades, compromised infrastructure, and injuries to residents. In Cali, portions of building exteriors sustained visible damage, while in Manizales, structural harm was noted at the local cathedral. Additional reports from Pereira indicated further property damage.

The earthquake occurred at 7:34 a.m. local time. Data from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) recorded the event at a slightly deeper level of 107 kilometers. The impact was especially severe in the Chocó Department, where the regional capital, Quibdó, experienced both injuries among residents and considerable structural destruction, according to regional authorities.

Authorities have voiced concerns about potential aftershocks and ongoing risks to affected populations. Emergency services and local government agencies have been mobilized to assess damage and deliver immediate assistance to those impacted. In response to the disaster, the national government established a crisis management unit in San José del Palmar to coordinate relief efforts and address urgent needs within the region.

The recently inaugurated President Abelardo de la Espriella has directed officials to prepare a comprehensive assessment of the incident's effects and prioritize aid to the hardest-hit communities. He also announced plans to visit the affected areas in person, underlining the government's commitment to supporting recovery operations.

Following the principal earthquake, the Colombian Geological Service registered a significant aftershock with a magnitude of 4.6 in Nóvita, also located in the Chocó Department. Residents in the region remain alert as emergency response teams continue operations and monitor for further seismic activity.

This seismic event has underscored the vulnerability of Colombia's infrastructure in earthquake-prone zones. Government bodies, disaster response teams, and local authorities are working together to restore essential services, ensure public safety, and support reconstruction in the aftermath of the natural disaster.
