Alberta set to vote in first referendum on independence question

Mon 19th Oct, 2026

Residents of the Canadian province of Alberta are due to vote on Monday in the first referendum ever held on the question of independence from Canada. The vote has been pushed onto the ballot by longtime separatist campaigners, including Cory Morgan, who has spent more than 25 years advocating for Alberta to become an independent country.

Morgan, who founded the advocacy group Pathway to Independence, indicated he would accept the outcome of the vote even if it goes against separation, but said he does not intend to abandon the cause regardless of the result.

The referendum asks Albertans to decide whether the province should pursue a binding resolution in the future on the question of separating from Canada. Voters have two options on the ballot: to remain part of Canada, or to begin a legal process that could lead to a future referendum on separation.

Polling suggests the independence option faces long odds, with roughly four in five residents saying they wish to remain part of Canada. Morgan, however, said his attention is on the remaining one in five who support separation, describing them as a movement that is not going away.

The vote's outcome is expected to carry implications both for the future of Alberta's separatist movement and for Canada more broadly.
