Brandenburg's authorities are raising alarms about the imminent implementation of border controls by Poland, which are expected to lead to significant traffic congestion along the shared border with Germany. Starting Monday, Poland will enforce these controls, which are projected to exacerbate existing traffic issues on the German side, particularly in the Frankfurt (Oder) area.
René Wilke, the Interior Minister of Brandenburg, has expressed concerns that the Polish measures will mirror the traffic challenges already faced in Germany, resulting in severe delays and potential gridlock. He indicated that the consequences of these controls would impact hundreds of thousands of residents in the border region, creating substantial disruptions for daily commuters and local businesses.
Wilke criticized the German federal government for its lack of responsiveness to Poland's requests regarding these border controls. He highlighted that Poland has been voicing concerns for over a year regarding the repercussions of Germany's border measures, but has received little in the way of constructive dialogue or support. The Minister emphasized that the focus should not only be on the enforcement of controls but also on the communication and cooperation between the two countries.
The new Polish border checks are scheduled to remain in effect until at least August 5. This decision comes as a countermeasure to the ongoing checks instituted by Germany since October 2023, which were aimed at curbing irregular migration. The German authorities had intensified these checks in May, leading to increased traffic on major routes like the A12, particularly between Frankfurt (Oder) and Swiecko.
In response to the anticipated traffic issues, Brandenburg's Minister-President, Dietmar Woidke, has called on the federal government to consider the addition of a third lane on the A12 to alleviate congestion and ensure smoother transit for travelers.
The spokesperson for the Brandenburg State Chancellery has expressed hope that the negative impacts of the Polish controls can be minimized. Efforts are being made on both sides to manage the situation as effectively as possible. There is hope for a resolution that addresses the needs of residents and maintains efficient cross-border traffic.
Furthermore, the federal government's representative for Polish relations, Knut Abraham, has warned that without timely intervention, the situation could lead to a deadlock, further complicating cross-border interactions.
As the situation develops, both countries aim to navigate the complexities of border control while balancing security needs with the daily realities faced by those living in the border regions.
