Tue 15th Apr, 2025

The Brandenburg Medical Chamber has expressed strong support for the continuation of the Land Physician Program, aimed at addressing the physician shortage in rural regions of Brandenburg. This initiative is crucial as the local government plans to offer continued financial incentives for medical students to establish their practice in these areas.

According to the proposed budget, the Land Physician Program will maintain its 18 scholarship placements for the years 2025 and 2026, with a budget allocation of EUR2.256 million for 2025 and EUR2.064 million for 2026. The program has been vital in nurturing future medical professionals, especially in light of the increasing demand for healthcare providers in less densely populated areas.

The state's Health Minister has highlighted the importance of this program as a key element of the coalition agreement, underlining its role in securing a skilled workforce in the healthcare sector. The Minister emphasized the necessity of attracting young physicians to live and work in Brandenburg, thereby strengthening the local healthcare infrastructure.

Scholarship recipients currently receive monthly financial support of EUR1,000 during their medical studies, and in return, they commit to practicing in rural Brandenburg for a minimum of five years post-graduation. This reciprocal arrangement aims to mitigate the ongoing shortage of healthcare professionals in these underserved regions.

Political parties, including the AfD and CDU, have voiced their opinions on the program. The AfD has called for enhancements to the scholarship scheme, advocating for the inclusion of dental students, while the CDU suggests increasing the number of scholarships and expanding support to various medical specialties.

In addition to the scholarship program, the establishment of the Medical University of Lusatia - Carl Thiem is expected to contribute to the retention of medical talent in the region. This initiative is part of broader efforts to improve healthcare access and quality in rural areas, ensuring that communities have the medical resources they need.

Overall, the continuation of the Land Physician Program represents a significant commitment by the Brandenburg government to address the healthcare challenges faced by rural communities, reinforcing the importance of local healthcare availability and supporting the next generation of medical professionals.
