Bonn North Bridge Closed Indefinitely Due to Structural Concerns

The Bonn North Bridge, an important motorway crossing over the Rhine, has been fully closed to traffic following the discovery of significant structural damage. The closure, implemented by Autobahn GmbH, comes after recent inspections revealed issues with the bridge's load-bearing framework, prompting immediate action to ensure public safety.

This suspension affects the A565 motorway bridge, which is a key transport link within the Bonn region and serves as a major thoroughfare for both local and long-distance traffic. The bridge typically accommodates around 100,000 vehicles each day, with heavy goods vehicles making up approximately five percent of this volume. Since February, trucks weighing more than 7.5 tonnes have already been restricted from using the bridge due to earlier safety concerns.

Conversely, all connections from the Bonn-Nord interchange onto the A565 heading towards Siegburg are closed, leading to a significant increase in detours and travel times across the network.

However, the organization has warned that substantial congestion and delays are expected, particularly during peak hours. Commuters and freight operators have been advised to plan their journeys carefully and allow extra time for travel.

The bridge, constructed in the 1960s, has been under increased scrutiny in recent years due to its age and the volume of traffic it supports. Previous inspections had already identified wear and various forms of damage, prompting incremental restrictions and ongoing monitoring. The recent assessment, however, uncovered further deterioration, leading to the decision for a comprehensive closure until further notice.
