Authorities in Bochum are investigating an incident in which a 12-year-old deaf girl sustained critical injuries after police discharged their firearms during a response to a potential threat. The incident unfolded after the girl, reported missing from her care facility and dependent on essential medication, was located in her mother's apartment in the Hamme district.

According to official reports, the girl had left her residential care home without taking her necessary medication, prompting an extensive search by law enforcement. Information received during the night led officers to the residence of her mother, who is also deaf. Upon arrival at the apartment building, police heard noises from inside but were unable to gain entry until the mother opened the door after a significant delay.

During the subsequent search of the apartment, officers encountered the girl, who was reportedly holding two knives and moved towards the police. In response to the perceived threat, one officer deployed a stun gun, while another used a service firearm, resulting in the child being struck by one or more bullets.

Emergency medical services were called to the scene immediately. The girl was transported to a nearby hospital, where she underwent surgery. Authorities later stated that her condition was critical but stable following the operation. The police emphasized the complexity of the situation, noting the challenges posed by the girl's age, her medical needs, and her inability to hear verbal commands, as both she and her mother are deaf.

Further complicating the case, officials confirmed that the girl was not permitted to be in her mother's custody, as legal guardianship and residence rights had previously been revoked. An internal investigation has been launched to determine the exact sequence of events, including the number of shots fired and the nature of communication between police and the family.

The local police union commented on the dangers associated with knife-related incidents, highlighting that individuals, regardless of age, can inflict serious harm in such situations. The union called the event distressing for both the family and the police officers involved, and underscored the unpredictability and rapid escalation of confrontations involving bladed weapons.

A homicide division from a neighboring police department, under the direction of the Bochum public prosecutor's office, is leading the investigation. Authorities have assured the public of a thorough and transparent review of the circumstances surrounding the incident.
