One of Berlin's Last Hardware Stores Faces Closure After Over a Century of Service

In the heart of Lankwitz, a small hardware store that has served the community for over 100 years is preparing to close its doors. Eisenwaren Sommermeyer, known for its wide range of tools and household items, will cease operations in August, marking the end of an era for local shoppers.

The store, which has been a staple in the neighborhood since its establishment in 1921, is currently run by Reinhold Habel, who took over the business 21 years ago. Under his stewardship, the shop has maintained its reputation for providing not only essential hardware items but also unique products that cater to the diverse needs of its customers.

From garden gnomes to specialized tools, Sommermeyer has prided itself on its ability to fulfill a variety of customer requests. Long-time patrons, such as 84-year-old Gerhard Simon, have fond memories of shopping at the store for specific items, like decorative radiator ventilators. Simon, a customer for three decades, reflects on the invaluable service the store has provided to the community over the years.

However, as the retail landscape evolves, many small, family-owned businesses like Sommermeyer face challenges that threaten their survival. Competition from larger retailers and the rise of online shopping have made it increasingly difficult for local stores to keep afloat.
