Following widespread disruptions caused by icy conditions in Berlin, above-ground sections of the city's U-Bahn network are progressively returning to operation. Early in the day, freezing rain led to significant outages, especially impacting the elevated parts of the U2 and U3 lines. As of midday, the Berlin public transport operator (BVG) reported that services on the U2 between Pankow and Potsdamer Platz had resumed, as well as on the U3 between Spichernstraße and Breitenbachplatz. However, several segments on both lines remain closed to traffic.
For several hours, the affected U-Bahn stretches were either completely suspended or operated with severe restrictions. The primary challenge was the presence of ice on the power rails, which made safe operation impossible. Efforts are ongoing to restore full service, with the BVG indicating that the U3 segment extending to Krumme Lanke is expected to reopen soon. Meanwhile, the section of the U3 between Warschauer Straße and Gleisdreieck remains out of service. To support commuters, replacement buses have been deployed along these routes.
Maintenance teams from the BVG continue to work on de-icing the U2 stretch between Zoologischer Garten and Potsdamer Platz. Specialized vehicles and crews were active throughout the night and morning, focusing on keeping tracks and critical infrastructure clear of ice and snow, particularly on tram routes and above-ground U-Bahn lines. Despite these challenges, the BVG confirmed that all bus and tram lines are currently operational.
Recent weather conditions have posed ongoing difficulties for Berlin's public transportation network. The previous week saw even greater disruption, with tram services completely halted at times due to frozen overhead lines. The current measures, including the deployment of special vehicles and the use of replacement buses, aim to minimize inconvenience for passengers and maintain essential connections across the city.
Public transport users are advised to check for real-time updates from the BVG, as ongoing weather patterns may affect restoration timelines and service availability. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and are prepared to implement further measures if necessary, ensuring the safety and reliability of Berlin's transit system during challenging winter conditions.
