A serious accident occurred in central Berlin on Tuesday afternoon, involving a tram and a coach near Alexanderplatz. The driver of the coach, which was empty at the time, sustained serious injuries, while six passengers aboard the tram suffered minor injuries.
Emergency services reported that the coach driver received immediate medical attention on the scene and was subsequently transported to a hospital under emergency care. Among the tram passengers was a school group, but details regarding the ages of the students or any additional injuries among them have not yet been disclosed. Psychosocial support services have been deployed at the site to assist the affected students.
The collision took place on Mollstraße, near the intersection with Berolinastraße, where the tram operates in the center of a wide roadway, with cars traveling on either side in multiple lanes. The impact caused significant damage to both vehicles, with the coach being pushed against the tram's overhead power lines. In total, 68 firefighters were deployed to the scene, according to a fire department spokesperson.
Currently, police are conducting an investigation to assess the circumstances surrounding the accident, and plans are underway to determine how to remove the damaged vehicles from the area. Traffic disruptions are expected on Mollstraße between Otto-Braun-Straße and Platz der Vereinten Nationen as a result of the incident.
As a precaution, tram services along lines M5, M6, and M8 have been suspended in the affected area. Additionally, disruptions have been reported on tram lines M2, M4, 18, and 21 due to damages to the overhead power lines spanning a wider section.
The Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG) expressed their concern regarding the serious accident, extending wishes for a speedy recovery to those injured in the incident.
