Public Transport Disruptions in Berlin During Easter Holidays

Mon 14th Apr, 2025

As Berliners prepare for the Easter holidays, travelers should be aware of significant disruptions to the city's public transportation system that will last until April 27. Multiple construction projects are currently underway, affecting both the S-Bahn and the BVG services.

S-Bahn Services

The S-Bahn ring lines S41, S42, and S46 have been significantly impacted due to ongoing demolition work on the A100 bridge in Westend, which spans the ring line. Since April 4, these lines have been interrupted between Halensee and Westend, with bus services provided as replacements. The S-Bahn is expected to resume normal operations by April 28, coinciding with the return of students to school.

Additionally, construction at Ostbahnhof has led to service interruptions for the S3, S5, S7, S75, and S9 lines, which will not operate between Ostbahnhof and Alexanderplatz until April 22. Replacement bus services are being utilized during this period. However, regional train services remain unaffected, allowing travelers to use the RE1, RE2, RE7, RE8, and RB23 lines between Ostkreuz, Ostbahnhof, Alexanderplatz, and Friedrichstraße.

The S5 line will only operate from Strausberg to Ostbahnhof, while the S75 will continue to the Warschauer Straße during night services. Furthermore, ongoing construction means that the S3 line will not run between Erkner and Rahnsdorf until May 5, with bus alternatives in place.

The S3 and S5 lines will also experience reduced frequency, operating every ten minutes between Friedrichshagen and Ostkreuz and between Mahlsdorf and Friedrichsfelde Ost, respectively, until April 22.

BVG Services

Starting Monday, a shuttle service will operate on the U2 U-Bahn line between Potsdamer Platz and Gleisdreieck due to renovations of the aging viaduct that spans the line. The construction will affect the entire segment between Mendelssohn-Bartholdy-Park and Nollendorfplatz, with the shuttle service expected to remain in operation until April 27. However, the complete closure between Nollendorfplatz and Gleisdreieck will extend until June 5, during which the U12 replacement line will function, covering the eastern section from Warschauer Straße to Wittenbergplatz and the western section to Ruhleben.

Regional Transport

From April 18 to April 22, the lower level of Berlin's central station and the entire tunnel route leading to Südkreuz will be closed. This will force rerouting of long-distance trains typically stopping at the central station and Südkreuz to other Berlin train stations. Several regional lines including RE3, RE5, RB14, and RB23 will also face modifications in their routes and service patterns.

For those traveling to the airport from the central station, only one direct connection per hour will be available from the RE8 to the airport during the Easter weekend. Affected regional services will include alterations to the RB14, which will now run from Berlin-Spandau through Jungfernheide and Gesundbrunnen to Lichtenberg, and the FEX service to the airport, which will continue to operate every half hour from Lichtenberg.

The RE5 line will terminate at Gesundbrunnen, while the RB23 service will now only run every two hours through central Berlin. Meanwhile, the RE8 service will only operate from Südkreuz in its southern segment, with the northern section remaining unaffected.
