Police Raids Target Berlin's Barbakh Clan Linked to Anti-Semitic Protests

Thu 13th Feb, 2025

In a significant law enforcement operation in Berlin's Neukölln district, police conducted a raid on a business located on Sonnenallee. The operation, which took place on a Tuesday evening, focused on the Barbakh Clan, a family known to authorities for their involvement in organizing anti-Semitic demonstrations in the city. Reports indicate that two individuals were arrested during the operation, one of whom was already subject to a warrant for arrest. Both individuals are now facing deportation proceedings.

The raid was supported by a specialized unit of the State Criminal Police Office, which deals with issues related to Islamism and terrorism. In the aftermath of the operation, Khaled Shehadeh, a controversial influencer associated with pro-Palestinian sentiments, took to social media to express his outrage, labeling Germany as a 'racist Nazi state' and seeking legal assistance to prevent the deportations.

The Barbakh Clan has recently gained notoriety as a prominent player in the landscape of influential family networks in Berlin. Originating from Khan Yunis in the Gaza Strip, many clan members have resettled in Berlin in recent months, particularly following the escalation of tensions related to Hamas's attacks on Israel. Security experts have identified the clan as a key organizer behind pro-Palestinian demonstrations that have sparked controversy and concern within the German capital.

Social media activity linked to clan members reveals open support for Hamas, including the use of Hamas symbols and expressions of solidarity with the Al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of the Hamas organization. Such displays have raised alarms among authorities, particularly in light of rising anti-Semitic sentiments during public demonstrations.

The Barbakh Clan first drew national attention following an incident involving Berlin's Cultural Senator Joe Chialo on September 12, 2024. During the opening of a new cultural center, Chialo was targeted by members of the clan who hurled a microphone stand at him, resulting in injury to a bystander. Chialo has been criticized by members of the clan for perceived pro-Israel stances.

Among those involved in the attack was Helmi Barbakh, an 18-year-old who was living in a refugee shelter in Neukölln at the time. He reportedly entered Germany in March 2024 and is now under investigation for charges related to public disorder and attempted bodily harm.

This police operation is part of broader efforts by German authorities to address rising extremism and anti-Semitic rhetoric in the country. The Barbakh Clan's activities have become emblematic of the challenges faced as Germany grapples with the implications of ongoing geopolitical tensions and their impact on domestic social dynamics.
