A serious accident occurred on Berlin's Müggelsee on Friday afternoon, resulting in a 32-year-old man sustaining severe injuries from a boat propeller. According to police reports, the incident took place near the mouth of the Müggelspree, where a group was navigating the lake on a rented raft.
The group, consisting of several young adults, was engaged in inflating an additional rubber dinghy while aboard the raft. During this process, two men, aged 32 and 30, accidentally fell into the water. While the 30-year-old managed to grab hold of the rubber dinghy and attempted to assist his companion, he was unable to reach him and called out for help.
The raft's operator, a 28-year-old, quickly tried to stop the vessel to prevent further danger. Despite these efforts, the 32-year-old man was drawn towards the still-operating boat propeller, suffering substantial injuries to his thigh and lower back.
Emergency responders, including water police and a specialized medical team, arrived at the scene promptly after being notified of the accident. The injured man received immediate medical attention on the spot before being transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital for further treatment.
The Berlin Water Police have initiated a full investigation into the circumstances leading to the incident. Early findings indicate that the accident occurred while the group was inflating the additional boat, but the specific sequence of events remains under review. Authorities are working to determine whether safety protocols were followed and if any factors contributed to the men falling overboard.
This incident highlights the potential dangers associated with recreational boating, particularly when multiple activities are taking place simultaneously on board. Safety experts urge individuals operating rented watercraft to strictly adhere to safety guidelines, ensure all passengers are aware of emergency procedures, and avoid inflating auxiliary boats while the vessel is in motion or the propeller is active.
The Müggelsee is a popular destination for both locals and tourists, attracting many visitors during the warmer months. Incidents involving boat propellers, while rare, can lead to life-altering injuries. Authorities recommend wearing life jackets at all times and maintaining clear communication among group members to prevent accidents.
As the investigation continues, officials remind those planning water-based activities to exercise caution, follow all safety regulations, and remain vigilant to the risks associated with recreational boating. Updates on the condition of the injured man and findings from the ongoing investigation will be released as soon as they become available.
