Authorities in Berlin are investigating two separate incidents of property damage at major hospitals that occurred overnight. The first incident involved a fire reported at a building belonging to the Charité hospital in the Mitte district. In a second event, the Vivantes Hospital on Kormoranweg in Neukölln sustained damage, with initial assessments suggesting the use of illegal pyrotechnics.
According to information from law enforcement, the events took place between Monday night and early Tuesday morning. While the exact causes remain under investigation, authorities have not ruled out the possibility of politically motivated actions. Forensic teams have been deployed to both locations to collect evidence, and specialists from the State Criminal Police Office's Explosives Offenses Unit are actively involved in the process.
Reports indicated that at Vivantes Hospital, explosive devices--possibly high-powered fireworks--may have been used, causing damage to windows and the building's facade. However, police have not officially confirmed the type of devices involved. There have been no reported injuries to patients, staff, or visitors at either site, and hospital operations continue without interruption.
Sections surrounding the affected areas, particularly near the Vivantes Hospital in the Buckow district, were cordoned off as a precaution and to allow investigators to work without interference. Security measures have been reinforced, and authorities remain in close contact with hospital administrators to coordinate ongoing safety protocols and maintain seamless healthcare services.
The police have engaged the state security division, responsible for investigating politically motivated crimes, to establish any potential links to extremist groups. At this stage, no suspects have been identified, and the investigation remains open. Officials continue to examine all available evidence, including possible surveillance footage and forensic samples, to determine the sequence of events and identify those responsible.
Police representatives emphasized that the use of illegal pyrotechnics poses significant dangers, not only due to the potential for property damage but also the risk of severe injury or loss of life. The incidents have raised concerns about the possible misuse of fireworks, particularly with upcoming festivities where such devices are often prevalent. Law enforcement agencies are urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities related to the storage, sale, or use of unauthorized pyrotechnic materials.
The authorities reiterated that, at present, there is no threat to the safety of patients or hospital employees. The situation is being closely monitored, and additional security reviews may be implemented as a precautionary measure. The investigation is ongoing, with police appealing to witnesses or anyone with relevant information to come forward.
