A devastating fire erupted in a high-rise residential building in Berlin's Lichtenberg district, resulting in the death of a nine-month-old infant and leaving several individuals hospitalized with serious injuries. The incident required a massive emergency response, with approximately 170 firefighters deployed to the scene to contain the blaze and rescue residents.
The fire started in an apartment on the third floor of a 20-story building located on Dolgenseestraße. The alarm was raised after a building porter detected the sound of a smoke detector and noticed heavy smoke coming from a unit. Emergency services arrived swiftly, evacuating around 70 residents, some of whom managed to escape on their own, while others required assistance due to the dense smoke permeating the hallways.
Firefighters discovered an unconscious woman and her two young children in a hallway on the third floor. Despite immediate medical intervention, the infant could not be revived. The mother, aged 26, and her five-year-old son were transported to hospital in critical condition. In total, eight people required hospitalization, including the 75-year-old tenant of the apartment where the fire originated.
Investigations revealed that the affected apartment was severely cluttered, which contributed to the rapid spread of the flames and complicated firefighting efforts. Authorities believe the extreme accumulation of personal belongings, often referred to as a 'hoarding' situation, played a significant role in intensifying the fire. The exact cause of the blaze remains under investigation by the Berlin State Criminal Police Office.
Following the incident, building management reported that 21 apartments were temporarily sealed off by police. The housing company responsible for the building, Howoge, assured that they are coordinating closely with displaced tenants, the majority of whom found temporary accommodation with friends or family. Electricity in the building remains operational, although heating and elevator services are partially suspended as technical teams work on restoring full functionality.
District authorities provided immediate support for affected residents, arranging hotel accommodations and transport for those unable to return to their homes. The local housing and building inspection departments are now assessing the fire-damaged units to expedite necessary repairs and enable residents to return as soon as possible.
Local leaders expressed deep sympathy for the victims and their families, emphasizing the seriousness of the tragedy and the importance of community solidarity. Support services are being made available to those impacted, particularly given the trauma experienced by many residents and local children.
Eyewitness accounts describe chaotic scenes during the evacuation, with emergency personnel coordinating efforts to ensure everyone's safety. Community organizations and local businesses offered additional help, providing necessities and emotional support to displaced residents as emergency crews worked late into the night.
In a related note, this fire follows another recent incident in a nearby high-rise, underscoring ongoing concerns about fire safety in densely populated residential complexes in Berlin. Authorities continue to investigate both incidents and review fire prevention protocols to enhance resident safety in the future.
