A collision between a fire engine and a passenger vehicle in Berlin-Wilmersdorf resulted in injuries to six individuals, including four firefighters and two civilians. The incident occurred as the fire engine was responding to an emergency call, heading toward the scene of a reported fire while utilizing both its siren and flashing lights.
According to official statements, the accident took place at the intersection near Fehrbelliner Platz. Preliminary findings from the police indicate that the 51-year-old driver of the car entered the intersection on a green light. At the same moment, the fire engine, en route to an emergency, attempted to cross the intersection, leading to the collision between the two vehicles.
Emergency services responded promptly to the scene. The driver of the car and a 12-year-old child, also traveling in the vehicle, sustained injuries that required hospital treatment. The fire engine's crew, consisting of four firefighters, were also injured. All four were relieved from their duties following the incident and transported to a medical facility for further assessment and care.
Authorities temporarily closed the intersection to manage the aftermath, secure the site, and conduct an initial investigation. Traffic in the area was redirected while emergency personnel attended to the injured and cleared damaged vehicles from the roadway.
Officials are currently reviewing the circumstances of the crash, examining factors such as right-of-way rules at intersections when emergency vehicles are in operation, and the visibility of the fire engine's signals to other motorists. The fire brigade confirmed that their vehicle was operating under standard emergency response protocols, with all required warning devices activated at the time of the incident.
Incidents involving emergency vehicles in transit are subject to specific regulations in Germany. While fire engines and ambulances are permitted to proceed through red lights or intersections when responding to emergencies, other drivers are expected to yield the right of way. However, such situations can still result in accidents if visibility is limited or if drivers are unable to react in time.
The Berlin police have initiated a formal investigation into the incident. As part of standard procedure, the vehicles involved will undergo technical inspection to determine if mechanical issues contributed to the crash. Statements from witnesses and involved parties will also be collected to clarify the sequence of events.
The accident underscores the challenges faced by emergency services in navigating city traffic, particularly in densely populated urban areas. Authorities have reiterated the importance of vigilance and adherence to traffic laws for all road users, especially when emergency vehicles are present.
This incident is part of broader efforts in Berlin to review and enhance road safety protocols, especially concerning interactions between emergency response teams and civilian traffic. Updates on the investigation and any new safety measures will be provided as more information becomes available.
