Berlin Introduces Central Antisemitism Officer for Universities

Tue 29th Apr, 2025

In response to the increasing incidents of antisemitism on campuses, Berlin is set to establish a dedicated antisemitism officer for all higher education institutions. This initiative aims to provide a central point of contact and support for addressing antisemitic incidents and promoting awareness.

Wissenschaftssenatorin Ina Czyborra announced during a press briefing that discussions within the Senate are ongoing to finalize the details of this new position. The goal is to implement this role as soon as possible to enhance the safety and support for Jewish students and staff across universities.

Recent events, including attacks on Jewish students and the spread of antisemitic rhetoric during protests related to the Middle East conflict, have underscored the urgency of this initiative. The officer would serve as a resource for universities, offering guidance on dealing with antisemitism and facilitating training and public events to raise awareness.

Czyborra emphasized the importance of creating a safe academic environment, stating that violence has no place in educational settings. She reiterated the commitment to combating antisemitism using all available means, particularly focusing on the security of Jewish individuals within the academic community.

The call for a centralized antisemitism officer was notably supported by Felix Klein, the Federal Government's antisemitism commissioner, who highlighted the need for a dedicated figure to oversee these efforts in Berlin's universities.

In a related context, the recent conviction of a 24-year-old man for violently attacking a Jewish student, Lahav Shapira, underscores the serious consequences of such antisemitic acts. The incident involved a brutal assault, which the perpetrator admitted to, though he denied any antisemitic intent. This case has been viewed as a critical example of the need for effective measures against violence and hatred on campuses.

As the discussions continue, stakeholders are hopeful that the establishment of this position will lead to a more proactive approach in addressing antisemitism and fostering an inclusive educational atmosphere in Berlin.
