As the new tourist season approaches, the city of Palma has unveiled a comprehensive security strategy aimed at addressing the ongoing issues related to alcohol-related incidents, violence, and vandalism at the popular Ballermann resort. The local government has recognized the need for increased safety measures to ensure a more secure environment for both visitors and residents.
Palma's Mayor has emphasized the commitment to preventing the recurrence of the troubling incidents that have marred the reputation of the Playa de Palma in recent years. These concerns have included excessive drinking, altercations, and other forms of public disorder that have attracted significant media attention.
To bolster security, the city has allocated three million euros from tourist tax revenues to fund the acquisition of eight new police vehicles, install surveillance cameras along the infamous Schinkenstraße, and deploy three drones for aerial monitoring. In addition, the plan includes the deployment of 170 extra police officers to enhance the presence of law enforcement in the area.
Mayor Jaime Martínez highlighted the importance of having visible police presence and rapid response capabilities, stating that the deployment of civilian patrols will enable law enforcement to respond swiftly to any emergencies that may arise. This initiative has been welcomed by local hotel operators who have previously raised concerns about insufficient police visibility in the area.
The new security measures are set to take effect on April 17, marking a proactive step toward ensuring the safety of all who visit the renowned beach destination. The effectiveness of these initiatives will be closely monitored, as similar promises have been made in the past without yielding the anticipated results.
Overall, the city's strategic approach aims to maintain a safe and enjoyable environment for tourists while addressing the underlying issues that have led to public disturbances in the past.
