Water Traffic: Authorities to Monitor Speeding Boats with Laser Technology

Sun 11th May, 2025

The Wasserschutzpolizei, or Water Protection Police, in Brandenburg is taking new measures to enhance safety on the waterways. With the summer season approaching, many boat owners are eager to test the limits of their motorized vessels. However, the police are issuing warnings regarding the significant dangers posed by reckless speeding on the water, and they are prepared to enforce strict penalties for violations.

In a bid to counteract the practice of speeding known as 'Vorwarnen,' where boaters alert each other about police presence through messaging apps, the Wasserschutzpolizei plans to adapt their enforcement strategies. They acknowledge that many boaters are familiar with the areas where speed monitoring is likely to occur and are often able to evade detection. A spokesperson for the police emphasized that they are aware of the common hotspots for speeding and do not always need to be visibly present to document violations.

The enforcement of speed limits is critical, as exceeding them can pose serious risks to other water sports enthusiasts and the environment. The police have stated that even minor infractions can result in hefty fines due to their potential danger. Speed limits on waterways vary significantly depending on the specific body of water, and boaters are encouraged to research the regulations applicable to their navigational routes.

Generally, the maximum allowable speed for sports boats on lakes wider than 250 meters, provided they are not within 100 meters of the shore, is set at 25 kilometers per hour. Boaters must remain vigilant and adhere to these regulations to ensure the safety of all waterway users.

The Wasserschutzpolizei aims to implement laser technology for speed measurements, which will enhance their ability to monitor boat speeds effectively. This technological advancement is part of a broader initiative to maintain safety on the water and reduce instances of reckless boating.

As the boating season gets underway, the police urge all boat operators to familiarize themselves with the relevant speed limits and to operate their vessels responsibly. The safety of all waterway users depends on the collective effort to adhere to established guidelines.
