Recent developments in the investigation of a double homicide in Costa Rica have revealed that one of the victims was a 57-year-old woman from Austria. This disclosure came from the Judicial Investigation Agency (OIJ), which confirmed the woman's identity, contradicting earlier reports that suggested she was German. The male victim's identity remains unknown, and both individuals were found with gunshot wounds.
The couple was discovered on a property located near Quepos, a town on the Pacific coast, where they had been buried. Autopsy results indicated that the woman had sustained three gunshot wounds, while the man had one. Authorities have not yet determined whether these injuries were the cause of death.
Law enforcement officials were alerted to the situation following a report of a robbery at the residence. According to OIJ Director Randall Zúñiga, the victims were not located immediately. They were ultimately found the next day in a grave on the property, thanks to the assistance of a search dog.
The investigation has revealed that both victims were found with their hands bound, and investigators discovered bloodstains within the home. Evidence suggests that the kitchen area had been cleaned in an effort to eliminate any traces of the crime. The prevailing theory among law enforcement is that the incident was a robbery gone wrong.
Neighbors reported that the couple lived together on the finca, a rural estate in the region. The incident has raised concerns about safety and the overall image of Costa Rica, a country often regarded as a safe haven for tourists, especially those from Germany, attracted by its beautiful beaches, volcanoes, and rainforests.
This tragic event has highlighted the ongoing issues of crime in the region, prompting discussions about the impact on tourism and the need for enhanced security measures to protect residents and visitors alike.
