Are war clouds looming over India-Pakistan border?

The political landscape in Turkey has taken a dramatic turn as Ekrem Imamoglu, the Mayor of Istanbul and a prominent opposition figure, was arrested at his home on Wednesday morning. The Istanbul Prosecutor's Office issued a warrant for his arrest, accusing him of supporting the PKK/KCK terror organization. This allegation stems from alliances made by Imamoglu's Republican People's Party (CHP) with Kurdish politicians ahead of the recent municipal elections, in which Erdogan's party faced a significant defeat.
The timing of Imamoglu's arrest has raised eyebrows, particularly as he was set to declare his candidacy for the presidency this Sunday. While the next national elections are not scheduled until 2028, Imamoglu aimed to use his candidacy as a potential shield against legal repercussions or, at the very least, to raise the political cost for President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in pursuing any actions against him.
As hundreds of police officers surrounded his residence, Imamoglu called on Turkish citizens to resist what he described as an immoral and despotic act. He asserted that the will of the people would prevail against intimidation and illegal actions and expressed confidence that Erdogan and his associates would one day be held accountable in a court of law.
In anticipation of public protests, the Istanbul governor imposed a ban on demonstrations and restricted access to social media platforms, including X and YouTube. Furthermore, two subway lines in Istanbul were shut down, including a station on Taksim Square, a traditional site for protests. Despite these measures, crowds gathered in front of municipal buildings to voice their opposition to Imamoglu's arrest.
Imamoglu's legal troubles had been anticipated for some time. Just the night before his arrest, Istanbul University revoked his business administration degree, citing "absence" and "clear errors." The prosecutor's office initiated an investigation into the legitimacy of his diploma, labeling it as "forged." If upheld in court, this decision would prevent him from running for president.
In recent weeks, several of Imamoglu's political allies have been detained, and new charges have emerged against him, including accusations of insulting a public official and attempting to influence judicial proceedings. He faces a potential prison sentence of over two years, with the first court hearing scheduled for April 11.
The crackdown on civil society has intensified, exemplified by the arrest of artist agent Ayse Barim, who was implicated in the Gezi Park protests of 2013 and accused of involvement in a coup attempt. This was perceived as an effort to deter public participation in protests should Imamoglu be arrested.
The protests that erupted in 2013 over a construction project in Istanbul's Gezi Park represented the most significant challenge to Erdogan's government at that time. Erdogan viewed the protests as a direct threat to his authority, reminiscent of the Arab Spring movements.
In recent speeches, Erdogan has indicated a desire to escalate repression against his opponents, stating that those who cannot accept the "new Turkey" would face consequences. Imamoglu's arrest appears to be a strategic move to consolidate Erdogan's power, even though, under current laws, he is not eligible for another term after 2028.
