In Argentina, a scandal involving alleged connections to drug trafficking is intensifying the scrutiny on President Javier Milei. The controversy centers around Federico Machado, a businessman purportedly linked to drug trade activities. José Luis Espert, a congressman affiliated with Milei's party, has withdrawn his candidacy for the upcoming parliamentary elections scheduled for the end of the month due to these associations.
Espert announced his decision, emphasizing that he could not allow the nation's project to crumble under pressure. He dismissed the allegations against him as a significant falsehood aimed at tarnishing the electoral process.
Reports surfaced last week indicating that Espert received approximately 200,000 USD (around 170,000 EUR) from Machado in 2020. Currently under house arrest in Argentina and sought by U.S. authorities for supposed ties to drug dealers, Machado's notoriety has cast a shadow over Espert. The congressman, however, claims that the payment was for consultancy services related to a mining venture in Guatemala owned by Machado.
Moreover, Espert acknowledged that he took around 35 flights on aircraft owned by Machado during his 2019 presidential campaign. Nevertheless, he maintains that he was unaware of Machado's alleged criminal connections.
This scandal comes at a precarious time for Milei's administration. His party, La Libertad Avanza, faced a substantial defeat in recent elections held in the populous Buenos Aires province, leading to a significant decline in the value of the Argentine peso. Compounding the situation, the Argentine parliament recently overturned two of Milei's vetoes, and his sister, Karina Milei, is currently under suspicion for corruption.
In light of Espert's withdrawal, Milei defended his associate, asserting that Espert's decision was made in the interest of prioritizing freedom. The president accused the opposition of damaging Espert's reputation through malicious rumors and defamatory attacks, claiming they orchestrated a harmful campaign against him.
The parliamentary elections in Argentina are set to take place on October 26. Currently, Milei's party holds a minority status in both chambers of parliament and is striving to secure additional seats to stabilize its governance. However, the prospect of achieving a parliamentary majority remains grim.
