Apple has introduced the new Vision Pro headset featuring the M5 chip, offering improved performance and a lower entry price compared to its predecessor. However, consumers hoping to upgrade from the Vision Pro M2 by trading in their existing devices through Apple's official program will be disappointed. Apple has stated that the Vision Pro M2 is not eligible for trade-in, setting it apart from other Apple products such as iPhones and Macs that typically qualify for this service.
The new Vision Pro M5 is now available starting at 3,699 euros for the base model with 256GB of storage, a decrease from the original 3,999 euro price tag of the Vision Pro M2. While Apple often allows customers to trade in previous-generation devices for credit towards new purchases, this is not the case for the first-generation Vision Pro. The company has confirmed in its product information that the headset does not qualify for any trade-in or buyback offers.
Apple's trade-in program customarily provides customers with an assessment of their old device and, upon acceptance, credits the evaluated value towards a new purchase. For instance, high-end iPhone models such as the iPhone 16 Pro Max can currently yield up to 795 euros in trade-in value, while select Mac computers can bring up to 1,820 euros. The absence of a trade-in option for the Vision Pro M2 is notable, as it may influence the resale market for these devices.
The rationale behind Apple's decision not to include the Vision Pro M2 in the trade-in program has not been disclosed. Industry observers have noted that the first-generation Vision Pro had relatively modest sales figures. The new M5 version, aside from its enhanced chip delivering improved graphics, artificial intelligence performance, and battery life, introduces only minor hardware updates such as a redesigned headband.
Current owners of the Vision Pro M2 who wish to upgrade to the M5 model will need to seek alternative methods to sell their devices, such as through secondary markets or online platforms like eBay. Listings for used Vision Pro M2 headsets have already appeared on such platforms, with asking prices starting around 2,500 euros. As the M5 becomes more widely available, a further decline in resale values is anticipated.
While the trade-in exclusion may be disappointing for some users, Apple offers limited upgrade options for existing Vision Pro M2 owners. Accessories like the new overhead strap, designed to enhance comfort, are available for separate purchase at a cost of 115 euros. Additionally, the updated Developer Strap, which provides improved performance, is compatible with both the M2 and M5 headset models.
This move by Apple highlights a shift in its approach to product lifecycle and customer upgrade incentives, particularly in the emerging market of mixed reality headsets. The company's decision may impact customer expectations and influence buying behaviors for future mixed reality products.
As Apple continues to expand its hardware portfolio, consumers are encouraged to carefully consider their upgrade options and the potential impact of resale value, especially for products not covered by the company's trade-in policies.
