Apple Plans Enhanced Vision Pro Headset with Improved Comfort and Performance

Apple is reportedly gearing up to launch the second iteration of its Vision Pro mixed-reality headset, initially released in Spring 2024. This new version is anticipated to address significant limitations identified in the first model, particularly regarding comfort and performance.

The original Vision Pro, priced at a steep 4000 euros, received praise for its high-resolution display and immersive experience. However, users have expressed concerns about its weight and the cumbersome nature of its wired battery setup, which contributed to discomfort during extended use.

Industry insider Mark Gurman has indicated that Apple is exploring solutions to enhance the headset's comfort. One such innovation is a redesigned headband mechanism intended to alleviate pressure on the user's head. While Apple currently provides two types of bands, they do not universally fit all users, prompting third-party accessory makers to seek alternatives. The new design is expected to minimize head and neck strain, although the overall weight of the device may not significantly decrease.

In addition to comfort improvements, the upcoming Vision Pro is set to feature upgraded internal components. It is expected to replace the older M2 system-on-chip (SoC) with the latest M4 variant, enhancing processing power for various functionalities, including eye tracking, which is crucial for the device's user interface. This upgrade aims to keep the Vision Pro competitive in a rapidly evolving market, particularly as the first model has struggled with sales performance.

Moreover, Apple has recently unveiled visionOS 26, the operating system that will run on the Vision Pro, introducing features such as eye-scrolling and new avatar options to enhance user interaction.

While the second generation of the Vision Pro is expected to launch within this year, a more comprehensive redesign is anticipated for 2027. This future model aims to significantly reduce the headset's weight and is rumored to include Mac tethering for professional applications. Furthermore, Apple continues to pursue the development of a true augmented reality eyewear solution.
