Apple Introduces iOS Feature to Alert Users About Slow Chargers

Apple has rolled out new charging-related features in its latest iOS update, enhancing user awareness of charging speeds and compatibility. The system now notifies users when their iPhone is connected to a power adapter that may be insufficient for optimal charging, helping to avoid prolonged charge times and potential compatibility issues.

Among the new features is an updated charging status display, which estimates the time remaining until the device is fully charged. This information is visible both on the lock screen and within the battery section of the system settings. The goal is to provide users with greater transparency regarding charging progress and expectations.

A significant addition is the system's ability to detect when a low-powered charger is being used. In such cases, iOS will display a warning message indicating that the connected charger may result in slower charging speeds. This is particularly relevant when using older USB-A chargers that provide only 5 or 7.5 watts of power. For wireless charging methods such as MagSafe or Qi2, the minimum recommended power is 10 watts to avoid triggering the slow charger notification.

If a charger with inadequate power output is connected, users may experience charging times that extend to three or four hours, especially with newer iPhone models that support faster charging. While slower charging poses no risk of damage to the device, users seeking faster results are encouraged to use a charger that meets Apple's recommended specifications. For instance, iPhone models from the 15 series onward require a USB-C charger with at least 18 watts for optimal charging, while MagSafe charging requires 20 watts for earlier models and 30 watts for iPhone 16 and newer.

Additionally, iOS now features improved compatibility checks for charging accessories. If the system detects an incompatible charger or cable--such as when power delivery parameters cannot be properly read or if a USB-C cable is faulty--it will refuse to charge and display a compatibility warning. In such situations, users are advised to switch to a certified charger and cable to ensure safe and efficient charging.

The charging time estimates provided by iOS are based on the device's current charging limit. By default, iPhones are set to stop charging at 80% to prolong battery health, a feature known as Optimized Battery Charging. The charging process resumes to 100% shortly before the user is expected to start using the phone, typically in the morning. Users have the option to adjust or disable this limit, in which case the system will display the estimated charging time until the battery is fully replenished.

These updates are designed to improve user experience by offering clear, actionable information about the charging process and by helping to prevent issues related to incompatible or underpowered chargers. Apple continues to emphasize the use of certified and appropriately powered accessories to maintain device performance and battery longevity.
