Apple Set to Introduce Mac-Like Features in iOS 19 and iPadOS 19

Apple is reportedly planning to enhance its mobile operating systems, iOS 19 and iPadOS 19, by incorporating features reminiscent of macOS, aiming for a more integrated user experience across devices. This information comes from a reliable leaker known for accurate predictions in the past.

According to the leak, the iPad will gain a menu bar when connected to external hardware, marking a significant shift in how the device is utilized. This new feature, alongside the Stage Manager functionality for window management--previously exclusive to macOS--will also be available on the iPhone when linked to an external display.

The leaker, Majin Bu, claims that the iPad will receive an updated version of Stage Manager, dubbed Stage Manager 2.0. This enhancement is expected to introduce new multitasking modes that simplify window management. Currently, iPadOS lacks a fully flexible window layout, which has drawn criticism from professionals who find Stage Manager's limitations unsatisfactory.

Once a keyboard is connected to the iPad, it will automatically activate the new mode, revealing a menu bar at the top of the screen. This addition aims to provide a more laptop-like experience on the iPad. However, specifics regarding the menu's functions remain unclear, including whether app developers will need to customize their apps to fit this new framework or if the adjustments will occur automatically.

Furthermore, iOS 19 is set to introduce a window management feature for iPhones, allowing users to have multiple apps visible on the screen simultaneously, a functionality that has been absent until now. However, this capability will only be accessible when the iPhone is connected to an external display via USB-C. A full desktop mode is not anticipated, but Stage Manager will enable users to extend certain app areas onto larger screens.

The number of apps that can be displayed simultaneously on iOS 19 will be limited, underscoring Apple's intention to create a seamless ecosystem across its devices. Apple is expected to unveil further details about iOS 19 and iPadOS 19 during the upcoming Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in early June.
