Apple Introduces 'AirPlay in the Car' with iOS 26

In a significant change to its CarPlay platform, Apple is set to launch a new feature called 'AirPlay in the Car' with the upcoming release of iOS 26 in September 2025. This feature will allow users to stream videos directly to their vehicle's main display, but only when the vehicle is parked.

Historically, Apple has prohibited the playback of video content via CarPlay due to safety concerns, aiming to minimize distractions for drivers. However, the introduction of AirPlay in the Car marks a shift in this policy, providing a new avenue for entertainment while the vehicle is stationary.

Details on compatibility with specific vehicles remain unclear, as Apple has informed automotive developers that they will need to enable support for this feature in their vehicles. This means that not all cars will automatically support AirPlay in the Car unless they undergo necessary technical upgrades. Apple has yet to release comprehensive documentation outlining the requirements for such integrations.

While other car manufacturers, such as Tesla, have already implemented video playback functionalities for parked vehicles, the AirPlay feature will specifically utilize the iPhone as the primary source, similar to how AirPlay functions with TVs and Apple TV devices. This design choice indicates that Apple may not be planning to allow standalone video applications within the CarPlay interface.

Apple's approach to this new feature will also have to align with traffic regulations in various countries, where the use of video in vehicles may be restricted or completely banned while driving. The geographical rollout of the AirPlay feature is still uncertain, as it may depend on local laws regarding in-car entertainment.

Previously, independent developers have attempted to introduce similar functionalities without Apple's authorization. In one instance, a developer behind the Sidecar app had briefly enabled video and internet browsing capabilities on vehicle screens while parked, but Apple quickly intervened to disable those features.

As Apple prepares for this major update, the automotive industry and consumers alike are watching closely to see how AirPlay in the Car will transform in-vehicle entertainment and whether it will enhance the overall driving experience.
