Apple Launches Comprehensive Health Study Utilizing Device Data

Fri 14th Feb, 2025

Apple has initiated a new health study that aims to integrate data collected from its various devices, including the Apple Watch, iPhone, and AirPods. Following previous extensive studies focused on heart health and hearing, this latest research will explore a holistic approach to health data collection in partnership with leading universities.

The study, named the 'Holistic Apple Health Study,' seeks to combine health data captured by Apple devices to enhance the understanding of human health. Collaborating institutions include Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. According to Calum MacRae, the principal investigator, there is significant potential for technology to improve insights into human health.

Previous studies conducted by Apple have successfully engaged a large number of participants, totaling approximately 350,000 across various research fields, such as hearing, heart health, and women's health. This new study will continue to build on that momentum.

Participants will be recruited through the Apple Research App, a platform currently unavailable in Germany, and eligibility is limited to individuals residing in the United States. The primary objective of this research is to investigate how modern technology, including the iPhone, Apple Watch, and AirPods, can contribute to improvements in physical and mental health, as well as overall well-being.

The research will cover a broad spectrum of health and medical concerns, including physical activity, aging, cardiovascular health, cognitive function, hearing, menstrual health, mental health, metabolic health, neurological conditions, respiratory health, sleep patterns, and more.

Distinctively, this study will be conducted entirely online, eliminating the need for participants to attend in-person appointments. This virtual approach is designed to assess how Apple's devices--and even those from other manufacturers--can monitor, detect, and anticipate changes in individuals' health over time.

While the exact number of participants has yet to be disclosed, the capabilities of the Apple Research App could facilitate the inclusion of over 100,000 participants, depending on the level of interest.
