Apple Implements Strict Geoblocking for Devices Sold in China

Fri 4th Apr, 2025

Apple has introduced stringent geoblocking measures that prevent users from accessing its AI system, Apple Intelligence, on devices purchased within mainland China. This restriction applies to Mac, iPhone, and iPad models bought in the region, effectively rendering the software unusable for these users.

The situation reflects a significant shift from earlier experiences within the European Union, where users could easily circumvent initial access issues by simply creating an American App Store account. However, Apple has since ensured that Apple Intelligence is fully operational across the EU without restrictions, while the same cannot be said for Chinese consumers.

According to Apple's own support documentation, the company has stated, "Apple Intelligence does not currently function on supported devices purchased in mainland China." This limitation also extends to devices brought into China from other countries if the Apple account is configured to the mainland region.

Interestingly, Apple markets specific iPhone models tailored for the Chinese market, identifiable by the designation "CH/A" in their model numbers. These devices include features such as dual-SIM slots, which are favored by many users in China. In contrast, the standard in Western markets often includes a physical SIM coupled with eSIM technology. For those wishing to utilize Apple Intelligence, purchasing an iPhone specifically designed for China is not advisable at this time.

Apple's approach to artificial intelligence in China differs markedly from its strategy in Western markets. While the company collaborates with OpenAI for developing most of its AI models and image generation tools in the West, it has turned to local partner Alibaba and its Qwen models for operations in China. This shift is largely influenced by Chinese regulations that restrict foreign companies from deploying AI technologies without local partnerships.

Beyond iPhones, it appears that iPads and Macs are also affected by the geoblocking measures related to Apple Intelligence. As previously mentioned, the model number "CH/A" serves as an indicator of devices that are likely to be restricted.

A lingering question remains regarding the future availability of a localized version of Apple Intelligence for the Chinese market. There are concerns that even with potential future releases, the existing Western AI framework may continue to be blocked for users in China, though Apple has not provided any official commentary on this matter. Notably, Chinese alternative AI models such as DeepSeek have garnered attention for their stringent content censorship.
