AMD has released initial performance metrics for its latest high-end desktop and workstation processors, the Ryzen Threadripper 9000 series, following an announcement made at the recent Computex event. The flagship model, the Threadripper Pro 9995WX, featuring 96 cores, is expected to deliver a substantial performance boost of over 10% compared to its predecessor, the Ryzen Threadripper 7000 series, while maintaining the same clock speeds and core counts.
The performance improvement is primarily attributed to the transition from the Zen 4 architecture to the more advanced Zen 5 architecture, which is projected to enhance general performance by an average of 16%. In applications focused on artificial intelligence and machine learning, AMD claims a more significant increase of 25%, facilitated by the introduction of 512-bit floating-point units.
When comparing the top-tier Ryzen Threadripper Pro 9995WX with its predecessor, the Ryzen Threadripper Pro 7995WX, both equipped with 96 CPU cores, a notable performance enhancement is observed. Tasks in video editing software such as Adobe AfterEffects and rendering applications like Keyshot show an improvement of approximately 26%. Additionally, large language models such as DeepSeek R1 TTFT exhibit a performance increase of around 23%. In comparison to Intel's current high-end workstation CPU, the Xeon w9-3595X, which has only 60 cores, the AMD 96-core processor reportedly completes rendering tasks using Chaos V-Ray up to 145% faster.
The Ryzen Threadripper 9000 series includes six Pro models ranging from 12 to 96 cores and three standard models with 24 to 64 cores, compatible with existing WRX90 and TRX50 motherboards. While the 9000WX series can operate on the more affordable TRX50 platform, the reverse is not true, as TRX50 boards support only four memory channels instead of eight for Registered-DIMMs. Memory speed has also been upgraded from DDR5-5200 to DDR5-6400, and AMD has introduced support for overclocking modules with EXPO profiles of DDR5-7000 and above.
Furthermore, the Threadripper Pro 9000WX processors will feature enhanced remote management capabilities, allowing for system administration via Wi-Fi through AMD's Integrated Management Technology (AIM-T). The entire Ryzen Threadripper 9000 series is expected to become available in July, with partnering manufacturers including Dell, HP, Lenovo, Supermicro, and Wortmann.
