Alibaba Releases Qwen3: A New Open-Source AI Model

Wed 30th Apr, 2025

Alibaba has unveiled its latest artificial intelligence model, Qwen3, making it freely accessible to the public. This innovative hybrid model allows users to switch between a detailed 'thinking mode' and a faster response mode, catering to various needs in AI applications.

Qwen3 is available in two configurations: the larger model, Qwen3-235B-A22B, which competes with renowned models like OpenAI's DeepSeek R1 o3-mini and Gemini 2.5 Pro, and the more compact Qwen3-30B-A3B, which is designed to be highly efficient despite its smaller size. Both models function as Mixture-of-Experts systems, meaning they utilize a selection of specialized experts to respond to inputs rather than engaging the entire model, enhancing efficiency and speed.

According to Alibaba, the development and open-sourcing of Qwen3 aim to significantly advance research and development in large foundation models. The company emphasizes its commitment to empowering researchers, developers, and organizations worldwide to craft innovative solutions using these advanced models.

The hybrid nature of Qwen3 distinguishes it from traditional AI models. In 'thinking mode', the model takes longer to process and verify responses, ensuring accuracy and depth, while the 'non-thinking mode' facilitates rapid responses, albeit with potentially less precision. This flexible approach allows for quick answers at a lower cost, aligning with various practical applications where speed is essential.

Qwen3 supports a diverse array of 119 languages and dialects, including but not limited to Chinese, English, Spanish, German, Luxembourgish, and Yiddish. It is also optimized for handling agentic tasks. The training data for Qwen3 encompasses web content and PDF documents, with resources derived from its predecessor, Qwen2.5, contributing to its capabilities. The model's mathematical and coding skills were enhanced using synthetic data generated by Qwen2.

Alibaba has implemented a three-stage training process for Qwen3: initial pre-training to establish foundational knowledge, targeted training in STEM fields, and finally, a specialized training phase focused on high-quality content for extended interactions. Benchmarks indicate that Qwen3 holds its ground against leading models from other providers, although practical performance may vary.

In China, the Qwen-based AI assistant, Quark, has gained immense popularity, while Meta AI is recognized as the most used AI chatbot globally. However, access to Meta AI is currently restricted in China, where Alibaba's solutions are expected to fill the gap. Additionally, Apple has not provided direct access to ChatGPT on its devices in China, further paving the way for Alibaba's AI models to take precedence.
