While current telescopes are still limited in their ability to fully unravel the mysteries surrounding supermassive black holes, advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) are paving the way for new revelations. An international team of astronomers has successfully developed a neural network capable of interpreting complex data derived from black hole simulations, enabling it to analyze real-world observations of these enigmatic cosmic phenomena.
The Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) is the most notable instrument used to study black holes. This project is not a single telescope but a global network of radio telescopes that function collaboratively as one. The EHT has facilitated the groundbreaking imaging of supermassive black holes, including the ones situated in M87 and Sagittarius A*, the latter being located at the heart of our Milky Way galaxy. These images are not conventional photographs but rather visual representations of radio wave emissions from the black holes.
To produce these images, supercomputers distributed globally processed the radio signals collected by the EHT. However, much of the data was discarded during this process due to the challenges in interpretation. The newly developed neural network, crafted by researchers at the Morgridge Research Institute in Wisconsin, aims to utilize this previously ignored data to enhance the resolution of the EHT's findings and facilitate new discoveries.
According to a statement from the institute, the AI has effectively analyzed discarded data, leading to the establishment of new parameters for Sagittarius A*. A revised image of the black hole's structure has emerged, revealing previously unobserved characteristics.
Recent findings suggest that the black hole at the center of the Milky Way may be rotating at near-maximum speed. The new imaging also indicates that the rotation axis of the black hole is oriented toward Earth, providing insights into the dynamics of the material disks that orbit it.
Previously, astronomers believed that Sagittarius A* rotated at a moderate to fast pace. Understanding its actual rotational speed is crucial as it informs how radiation behaves in the vicinity of the black hole and offers hints about its stability.
The lead researcher expressed excitement about the findings, noting that the AI and machine learning methodologies represent an initial step towards deeper investigations. Future work will involve refining and expanding the associated models and simulations to further enhance our understanding of these cosmic giants.
