The research reveals that individuals whose retinal images exhibit a greater degree of nearsightedness than indicated by their eyeglass prescriptions face a heightened risk of developing conditions such as retinal detachment and tears. The findings underscore the necessity for a more nuanced evaluation of nearsightedness, taking into account subtle retinal changes that traditional glasses prescriptions may overlook.
The new metric, termed Fundus Refraction Offset (FRO), offers clinicians a refined tool for identifying patients who are more susceptible to vision-threatening complications associated with myopia. With projections estimating that nearly half of the global population will be myopic by the year 2050, this advancement could prove pivotal in managing eye health on a larger scale.
Myopia affects over one billion individuals worldwide, and those with severe prescriptions have been found to be 13 times more likely to experience retinal detachment. Despite this, the risk can vary significantly even among those with similar prescriptions, highlighting the need for a more individualized assessment.
In this groundbreaking study, researchers from the University of Edinburgh analyzed health data and retinal images from over 9,300 participants aged 40 to 69 from the UK Biobank, all of whom had no prior retinal issues. By employing AI to compare the structural appearance of individuals' retinas against the expected standards based on their glasses prescriptions, the FRO score was calculated.
The results indicated that a decrease in the FRO score--suggesting a retina appearing more nearsighted than anticipated--correlates with a 50% increase in the likelihood of developing retinal detachment or tears over a 12-year period. This correlation holds true even when controlling for variables such as age, sex, and initial glasses prescription.
This innovative score not only enhances the identification of individuals at risk but also has implications for clinical decisions regarding elective eye procedures like laser surgeries. By recognizing which patients may have more vulnerable retinas despite similar prescriptions, healthcare providers can make more informed choices about treatment options.
The principal investigator of the study emphasized the importance of shifting away from relying solely on glasses prescriptions. Instead, incorporating retinal information allows for a more effective targeting of care to the growing population affected by myopia and its related complications.
