As artificial intelligence (AI) becomes increasingly integrated into the job application process, many companies in Germany are facing an overwhelming influx of irrelevant resumes. This trend complicates the search for suitable candidates, leading to significant challenges in the hiring process.
A recent study conducted by the market research firm Censuswide on behalf of the HR company Remote revealed that German companies expend an average of 9.91 working days per job posting to filter out these irrelevant applications. The study highlights the rising number of applications generated with the help of AI, which has prompted many organizations to shorten their review times. Consequently, not every application receives the necessary attention, making it harder to identify qualified candidates.
Approximately 30 percent of the surveyed executives indicated that the sheer volume of applications is burdensome. Despite this high applicant influx, around 40 percent of companies reported difficulties in finding qualified candidates for their open positions. Moreover, over three-quarters of organizations have received AI-generated applications containing inaccurate information in the last six months. As a result, nearly 40 percent of companies have reduced the time allocated for reviewing applications.
The study suggests that many job seekers are utilizing AI-assisted documents to apply for multiple positions simultaneously, hoping to enhance their chances of securing employment. However, this strategy can backfire, as it becomes increasingly challenging for applicants to stand out. Companies are also adopting automated selection processes, further complicating the landscape for job seekers. More than 70 percent of executives noted an increase in unqualified applicants, with over 90 percent acknowledging this as a significant issue for their businesses.
In response to the challenges posed by AI-generated applications, companies are implementing various countermeasures. Approximately 25 percent of organizations have adopted pre-screening methods to verify the information presented in applications. Around 30 percent are collaborating with external recruitment agencies to manage their hiring processes. Additionally, one-third of the surveyed leaders expressed intentions to reassess the qualifications required for job postings. Furthermore, another third is leveraging AI applications to manage the influx of AI-generated resumes and facilitate initial screening.
The study surveyed around 4,100 executives with hiring responsibilities across ten different countries, with approximately 500 respondents from German companies. Despite the ongoing shortage of skilled labor, the number of job openings in the IT sector has recently declined, with C-level positions seeing a roughly 50 percent reduction in 2024. An analysis by the job platform Indeed also revealed that less than 10 percent of job postings in the IT field include salary information.
