Laparoscopic surgery has revolutionized surgical practices in high-income nations, offering a minimally invasive option that reduces infection risks and accelerates recovery. However, the high expense of surgical equipment has rendered this technique largely inaccessible in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).
In response to this challenge, researchers have introduced the KeyScope, an affordable laparoscope specifically designed for use in LMICs. Recent findings published in Biophotonics Discovery detail how the KeyScope was developed using a human-centered design approach.
Traditional laparoscopes typically exceed $130,000, a price point that is often unattainable for healthcare facilities in LMICs. The KeyScope, in stark contrast, is priced at around $1,000, providing a feasible alternative. This significant cost reduction is achieved by utilizing LEDs and a compact camera at the device's tip, replacing the conventional fragile lens systems and fiber optics.
The KeyScope is designed for durability and ease of use. It connects directly to a laptop via USB for both power and video transmission, an essential feature for regions that experience frequent power outages. Its waterproof design and absence of detachable components facilitate submersion sterilization--a common practice in LMICs--while minimizing the risk of misplacing parts that are challenging to replace.
Another significant benefit of the KeyScope is the potential for local manufacturing. A Ugandan company has successfully demonstrated the capacity to produce this device, ensuring that it can be serviced and distributed effectively across Africa. Testing has shown that the KeyScope provides high-resolution images, a wide field of view, accurate color reproduction, and low distortion--qualities comparable to those of standard laparoscopes.
The introduction of the KeyScope marks a pivotal advancement in making laparoscopic surgery more accessible to patients worldwide. By addressing the unique challenges faced by LMICs, this innovative tool has the potential to enhance surgical outcomes and significantly impact lives in regions where access to advanced medical technology is limited.
