AfD to Decide on Maximilian Krah's Bundestag Seat Amid Controversies

Mon 24th Feb, 2025

The far-right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) party is set to make a significant decision regarding the inclusion of Maximilian Krah in the Bundestag during its upcoming meeting on Tuesday. Krah, who garnered the most votes in his constituency, is currently facing scrutiny due to allegations of corruption and controversial statements regarding the SS.

Alice Weidel, the leader of the AfD, indicated that the decision on whether Krah will join the new parliamentary group has not yet been finalized. This announcement comes after Krah secured his position in the Bundestag by winning a significant number of first votes in the Chemnitzer Umland-Erzgebirgskreis II electoral district.

Since 2019, Krah has represented the AfD in the European Parliament and served as the party's lead candidate during the recent European elections. However, his tenure has been marred by allegations, including the arrest of one of his aides for suspected espionage on behalf of China. Krah has denied claims regarding receiving funds from Russian sources.

Adding to the controversies, Krah made light of the SS, which led to public outrage and resulted in his suspension from the AfD's election campaign. Following his remarks, the AfD's leadership decided to distance itself from him by excluding him from their delegation in the European Parliament. Krah is also not part of the newly formed parliamentary group that the AfD established with seven other right-wing parties from across the EU.

The AfD now faces a crucial moment as it evaluates the potential impact of Krah's presence in the Bundestag. The party's leadership, including Weidel, is reportedly concerned about how Krah's past controversies might affect the party's image and electoral prospects moving forward. The outcome of Tuesday's meeting will be pivotal for both Krah's political future and the broader strategy of the AfD.
