The picturesque cliffs of Étretat in Normandy are now off-limits to tourists as part of new safety regulations aimed at preventing accidents and rockfalls. The local authorities have taken this decisive action in response to increasing incidents and ongoing coastal erosion, which poses significant risks to visitors.
Access to the iconic chalk cliffs will be restricted, particularly prohibiting tourists from walking through the well-known rock formations at the base of the cliffs. Furthermore, extensive areas of the beaches will be closed to the public, with the only exception being the section adjacent to the promenade in Étretat. Access to three notable rock formations has also been banned to enhance safety measures.
Each year, the striking cliffs attract approximately 1.5 million visitors. Unfortunately, there have been numerous fatal accidents as tourists venture too close to the edge of the approximately 90-meter-high cliffs in pursuit of the perfect photo or selfie.
Under the new regulations, visitors are limited to approaching within five meters of the cliff's edge. The local municipality has made it clear that they will not assume any liability in the event of accidents resulting from violations of these restrictions or from individuals climbing over barriers.
Those who fail to comply with the access limitations will face fines starting at 35 euros. Moreover, in cases of serious accidents, the local fire department has stated that they will charge for rescue operations if individuals need to be retrieved from the cliffs.
The fire department previously issued warnings about the rising number of accidents and rockfalls in 2022. In a video released at that time, officials highlighted the dangers present both at the top of the cliffs and at their base, noting that visitors were increasingly taking risks to capture images on the rocky outcrops.
These measures reflect a commitment to ensure the safety of both locals and tourists while preserving the natural beauty of Étretat's coastal landscape.
