Aachen has witnessed a series of alarming arson incidents that kept local police and firefighters on high alert over the weekend. The events began on the evening of Saturday, February 15, 2025, when emergency services were alerted to a burning trash bin on Franzstraße around 10 PM. Fortunately, firefighters responded quickly, extinguishing the blaze without any injuries reported.
Shortly after controlling the fire on Franzstraße, the firefighters noticed another fire, this time involving a tree in a backyard on Matthiashofstraße. Once again, their swift action prevented the flames from spreading to nearby structures, averting what could have been significant property damage. A 45-year-old man was apprehended nearby and found to be heavily intoxicated. He was subsequently taken into custody, where medical staff collected a blood sample for analysis. Authorities have initiated proceedings against him for severe arson.
In the early hours of Sunday, February 17, 2025, another alarm was raised around 2 AM. Witnesses reported seeing a man setting fire to a pile of paper in front of a residence on Trierer Straße. Police officers arrived on the scene and managed to extinguish the fire themselves. Again, no injuries were reported, and a 56-year-old suspect was apprehended in the vicinity. He was placed in custody to prevent further incidents, and an investigation into his actions is also underway.
Later that same morning, at approximately 4:40 AM, another report came in regarding a burning trash bin located in front of a property on Blücherplatz. A vigilant bystander managed to pull the flaming container away from the building and promptly alerted the fire department, who extinguished the fire before it could cause any harm. Despite the immediate response, a search for the perpetrator yielded no results, prompting the criminal investigation department to take over the case.
These incidents highlight the ongoing concern regarding public safety and the need for vigilance among residents. The local authorities are appealing to the community for any information that could aid in their investigations. The recent series of arson cases raises serious questions about the motivations behind such reckless acts and the measures necessary to prevent future occurrences.
