Hamburg/Hannover - The recent announcement of a bridge closure in Germany has raised concerns about potential traffic disruptions just as the summer travel season kicks off. The bridge at the Horster Dreieck, which facilitates traffic towards the north and Hamburg, has been shut indefinitely due to significant structural damage discovered during recent maintenance operations.
On Thursday, substantial issues were identified in the bridge's concrete, prompting a decision to close it for safety reasons. As a result, traffic on the A7 highway heading towards Hamburg (West) and Flensburg will be redirected. Experts are currently conducting further assessments to determine the extent of the damage, and it's unclear how long the bridge will remain closed. However, it is evident that commuters and vacationers alike will face increased stress, longer travel times, and detours due to this closure.
The repair project is estimated to cost approximately EUR19.34 million, highlighting the seriousness of the situation. In addition to the closure at Horster Dreieck, motorists are reminded that several other bridges across the country are also undergoing repairs, contributing to a broader pattern of infrastructure challenges.
The officially designated detour for affected traffic directs vehicles to utilize the parallel lane of the A1, continuing towards the Maschener Kreuz, before merging back onto the A7 via the A39. This rerouting will also affect large and heavy transport vehicles, which are required to stop at the nearest rest area. Notably, the rest area at Lüneburger Heide Ost has been identified as a crucial stop for these vehicles, where they will need to apply for permission to continue their journey.
As the situation develops, authorities urge all travelers to plan their routes accordingly and allow extra time for their journeys. The closure is expected to exacerbate existing traffic conditions, particularly during peak travel times. Local agencies are working diligently to manage the flow of traffic and minimize the impact of this unforeseen disruption.
