Major A7 Motorway Bridge Closure Causes Significant Disruptions in Bavaria

Traffic on a crucial segment of the A7 in Bavaria is facing notable disruptions this weekend due to the full closure of a motorway bridge near the Bavarian-Hessian border.

Motorists in the Unterfranken region are experiencing delays as the A7 motorway is closed between the Bad Brückenau/Volkers and Bad Brückenau/Wildflecken exits in the direction of Würzburg. This closure is being implemented to facilitate essential maintenance and preliminary reconstruction work on the Römershag valley bridge, a structure that has shown significant signs of deterioration.

According to the responsible authorities, the closure began on Saturday evening and is expected to last until midday on Sunday. During this period, all traffic is being routed via a designated detour, redirecting vehicles to the Bad Brückenau/Wildflecken interchange to ensure continuity of travel and minimize congestion. The affected section is a busy corridor, with approximately 42,000 vehicles traversing this stretch daily.

The Römershag valley bridge, which spans 322 meters, has been in service for over five decades. Inspections revealed that both its upper and lower structures are suffering from extensive age-related and structural damage. The bridge no longer meets the demands of modern traffic, especially given the substantial increase in heavy goods transport since its original construction. As a result, the bridge is undergoing a comprehensive replacement to ensure long-term safety and reliability.

The complete reconstruction of the bridge is a major infrastructure project, with an estimated investment of around 95 million euros. Construction activities began in 2022 and are expected to continue as the new bridge is engineered to meet current and future traffic requirements. The project underscores the ongoing need to modernize Germany's vital transport routes, particularly those that serve as key north-south arteries for freight and passenger vehicles.

The A7 motorway is one of Germany's principal transportation links, connecting Flensburg in the far north with Füssen in the south. Stretching nearly 960 kilometers, it is among the country's longest and most heavily trafficked highways. The segment currently affected by the closure is particularly important for regional and long-distance travel, making the ongoing construction efforts especially impactful for commuters and logistics operations.

Authorities are advising drivers to plan for additional travel time and to follow the posted detour routes. While the current closure is scheduled to end by Sunday afternoon, further restrictions and closures are likely as the bridge replacement progresses.
