Thu 6th Feb, 2025

As the electric vehicle (EV) market continues to evolve, 2024 has seen significant sales achievements in the sector. The latest data reveals the most popular electric cars in Europe, with the top two positions occupied by Tesla models, reaffirming the brand's dominance in the market.

Leading the sales chart is the Tesla Model Y, which has retained its position as the best-selling electric SUV, with a remarkable 209,214 units sold across Europe. This success is not unexpected, as it also topped the charts in 2023. Following closely is the Tesla Model 3, a compact sedan that secured the second position with 112,798 units sold. Together, these two models exemplify Tesla's stronghold in the electric vehicle landscape, contributing to a total of 322,003 vehicles sold by the manufacturer, more than double the sales of its closest competitors combined.

In third place is the Volvo EX30, which debuted in 2023 and has quickly gained traction, selling 78,032 units. The Skoda Enyaq, another popular model, takes fourth place with 68,874 registrations, while the Volkswagen ID.4 lags behind in fifth position with approximately 64,756 sales. Notably, the Skoda Enyaq has outperformed its VW counterpart, indicating a shift in consumer preferences within the VW group.

The overall sales figures highlight Tesla's robust performance, but they also reflect an impressive year for the VW Group. Despite facing challenges, VW has managed to sell a total of 1,354,966 new vehicles in Europe, marking their highest market share in three years. Toyota follows in second place with 916,522 units sold, while Tesla ranks 16th with 325,449 vehicles, primarily from its premium models, the Model S and Model X, which have seen lower sales in the region.

In Germany, the electric vehicle market mirrors the European trend, with the Tesla Model Y leading the charge, recording 26,657 units sold from January to November 2024. The Skoda Enyaq follows closely with 22,980 units, showcasing a competitive landscape among electric SUVs. The VW ID.4 and ID.3 also have significant sales figures, with 19,753 and 18,805 units, respectively, emphasizing the strong demand for electric vehicles in the country.

The VW Group's performance is noteworthy, as it collectively sold 100,911 electric vehicles in Germany, significantly outpacing Tesla's sales in the same market. This trend continues across Europe, where the group sold over 236,255 units, including models such as the Skoda Enyaq, VW ID.4, ID.3, and Audi Q4 e-tron.

As the electric vehicle market expands, these sales figures not only illustrate consumer preferences but also underscore the competitive nature of the industry. With automakers continually innovating and introducing new models, the landscape is set for further shifts in the coming years.
