Potential Risks of CBD Use During Pregnancy Revealed in New Research

Cannabidiol (CBD), a compound found in cannabis, has gained popularity for use during pregnancy as a remedy for various symptoms such as nausea, anxiety, and sleep disturbances. However, recent findings from researchers at McMaster University raise concerns about the safety of CBD consumption during this critical period.

A study published in eBioMedicine on February 5, 2025, indicates that the use of both tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)--the psychoactive component of cannabis--and CBD during pregnancy may be linked to potential risks, including impaired fetal growth. The research highlights a gap in the existing literature, as previous studies mainly focused on cannabis smoke or THC exposure, leaving the effects of other cannabis components and consumption methods largely unexplored.

The study's lead researcher noted that the perception of CBD as a safer alternative has persisted despite a lack of comprehensive evidence regarding its effects during pregnancy. This new investigation aims to clarify those uncertainties. It involved administering cannabis oil to mouse models and monitoring the development of fetuses throughout pregnancy and after birth.

The results revealed that both THC and CBD were associated with reduced fetal growth, with affected fetuses being smaller than those from non-exposed mice. The study also identified disruptions in the development of placental blood vessels, which play a crucial role in supplying nutrients to the developing fetus.

Furthermore, the research indicated that both compounds could negatively affect a specific type of immune cell essential for normal placental development, potentially leading to complications in nutrient and oxygen delivery to the fetus. These findings may contribute to instances of intrauterine growth restriction.

Behavioral assessments conducted on the offspring after birth showed alterations in aggression, activity levels, and learning capabilities, suggesting that exposure to cannabis during pregnancy could have long-term consequences beyond physical growth.

While the researchers emphasize the need for further studies to understand the implications of cannabis use during pregnancy in human subjects, they underscore the importance of this research in highlighting potential dangers associated with CBD consumption in this context.
