Nationwide Strike by Postal Workers Causes Delivery Delays

Thu 6th Feb, 2025

In response to ongoing labor disputes, the Verdi union has initiated a nationwide warning strike involving postal workers across Germany. This strike affects both letter carriers and parcel delivery personnel, with participation expected at numerous locations throughout the country.

This action marks the sixth day of strikes since the previous week, reflecting escalating tensions in the negotiations. Recent work stoppages have reportedly impacted a small percentage of overall mail deliveries, resulting in delays of one to two days for some shipments. The union has indicated that different locations will be targeted than those affected on Wednesday.

Verdi is advocating for a wage increase of 7% along with three additional vacation days. This request aims to help employees cope with increased workloads. Notably, union members are seeking an even greater benefit, proposing four extra vacation days.

In contrast, Deutsche Post DHL has expressed concerns regarding the feasibility of these demands. The company highlights significant investment needs and declining volumes of letter deliveries in the digital age, suggesting that the financial leeway for wage increases is extremely limited. The management emphasizes that the current economic environment does not support the union's requests.

The next round of negotiations is scheduled for Wednesday, January 12. As the situation develops, many are watching closely to see how both parties will navigate these challenges.
