Recent statistics reveal a troubling rise in politically motivated crimes directed at refugee accommodations in Germany. In 2024, the police documented 218 incidents targeting these facilities, a significant increase from the 167 such cases reported in 2023. This data was obtained from the Federal Ministry of the Interior in response to an inquiry from a parliamentary group.
Among these incidents, 28 were classified as violent crimes, resulting in injuries to 14 individuals, including a child. Furthermore, while there was a slight decline in politically motivated offenses against refugees outside of accommodations--totaling 1,905 incidents with 237 classified as violent--experts anticipate that these figures could rise as additional reports from the fourth quarter of the year are processed. Notably, previous quarterly data has shown substantial increases due to late reports, indicating that the current numbers may not reflect the complete picture.
Concerns surrounding the attitudes towards refugees have been expressed by political figures. One representative highlighted that the ongoing high rates of insults, threats, and attacks on refugees are alarming and have been notably overlooked by significant portions of both the political sphere and the public. The representative pointed out that the individuals affected are those seeking safety and protection in Germany, yet they often encounter racist hostility and violence instead.
The rise in such sentiments is attributed to a broader political narrative that scapegoats asylum seekers for various societal issues, including the collapse of public infrastructure, housing shortages, and rising crime rates. This scapegoating is believed to embolden individuals with racist motives to harass and attack refugees.
Advocates for social justice argue that anti-racist protests must address not only the physical violence occurring on the streets but also the rhetoric perpetuated by some lawmakers that fosters discrimination and exclusion through the establishment of divisive laws.
