Hitler as chancellor, 80th anniversary

Wed 30th Jan, 2013

Today marks the 80th anniversary of Adolf Hitler's appointment as chancellor of Germany. Events across the country will chart the rise to power of one of history's most infamous leaders and the support he received from the general population. At the German History Museum in Berlin, an exhibition entitled Destroyed Variety, Berlin 1933-1938, runs until November and will chart the consequences of the National Socialists' control over German life between 1933 and the Kristallnacht pogrom of November 1938, when Jewish businesses and synagogues were torched.

Angela Merkel will also take part in a special parliamentary session in the Bundestag to remember the victims of National Socialism.

Events will run throughout the year to allow people to reflect on Hitler's rise to power and the aftermath of his election victory.
