The advent of 5G technology has revolutionized data consumption patterns in mobile networks, leading to a remarkable increase in data traffic. As more users engage in streaming videos, playing online games, and downloading large files on their smartphones, the volume of data traversing these networks has skyrocketed.
Recent reports from major telecommunications providers in Germany, including O2 and Deutsche Telekom, reveal that data usage in their 5G networks has surpassed the one billion gigabyte mark within a single year. Specifically, O2 Telefónica announced that between October 2024 and September 2025, it transported over one billion gigabytes of data, marking an unprecedented high. The CEO of O2 noted that 5G has transitioned from being a technological novelty to an integral part of daily digital life within just five years.
Deutsche Telekom echoed similar sentiments, confirming that they also crossed the one billion gigabyte threshold in their 5G network over the past year. By contrast, Vodafone reported a substantial increase in data usage, reaching 0.75 billion gigabytes during the same timeframe, which represents a doubling of their previous figures. To put this into perspective, one billion gigabytes is equivalent to one exabyte, or a one followed by 18 zeros.
So, what is driving this surge in data consumption? The term '5G' refers to the fifth generation of mobile technology, which made its debut in Germany in 2019 as the successor to 4G (LTE). 5G technology offers faster and more stable connections, significantly enhancing the user experience. As the infrastructure for 5G has been extensively developed, coverage has expanded to most regions, making it readily accessible to consumers.
With the increasing adoption of 5G-compatible smartphones and service plans that support 5G, users are now enjoying more generous data allowances at relatively stable pricing. In many cases, mobile service plans are offering increased data volumes without raising costs, which has contributed to greater customer retention.
This increase in data allowances has led many mobile internet users to adopt less conservative data usage habits compared to previous generations. As a result, users are now more inclined to stream content, download data packages, and utilize internet calling on their smartphones and tablets.
According to the Chief Technology Officer of Vodafone Germany, the rise in mobile streaming of films and series, along with the sharing of high-resolution content on social media platforms, has been a significant factor in the increased data traffic. Platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, and Snapchat are particularly noted for their role in generating substantial data volumes. Additionally, in this digital age, the demand for data is further amplified by the growing prevalence of smartwatches and connected vehicles.
