The 146th Blossom Festival in the picturesque Havel city of Werder has officially commenced, welcoming visitors to its scenic orchards and gardens. This traditional event, which celebrates the beauty of spring, unfolds in stages, allowing attendees to explore local farms and enjoy the seasonal delights.
With the sun shining brightly, the festival's opening day saw initial crowds enjoying a relaxing atmosphere. Visitors can participate in 'blossom tours' via bus, navigating through the lush orchards that are now in bloom. However, it's noteworthy that some trees have already shed their white and pink blossoms. Despite the pleasant weather, temperatures at the festival's start struggled to exceed 16 degrees Celsius.
Unlike previous years, the festival is adopting a new approach due to past incidents that have marred its reputation, particularly concerning excessive drinking and related offenses. Consequently, the city, which has a population of approximately 27,000, has revamped its festival strategy. In response to a financial shortfall in 2024, the festival's length was reduced, and safety measures have been heightened.
Initially, the festival will not feature the traditional fairground attractions, such as rides and games, which are set to open on April 30. The vibrant carnival atmosphere is anticipated to emerge on May 1, as the festival transitions into its more festive phase, complete with a designated fairground area.
To ensure the safety of all attendees, the city has introduced a weapons ban within the festival grounds, a measure that has been in place in previous years as well. The local police reported a significant decrease in criminal activities during the 2024 festival, leading to a calmer environment overall. Additionally, federal police support is being implemented to oversee visitor arrivals and departures.
The Blossom Festival, celebrated annually since 1879, showcases Werder's charming old town, which is situated on an island amidst the Havel River. This year's event promises to maintain the festival's long-standing heritage while prioritizing safety and community enjoyment.
