Zelenskyy Issues Warning to Russian Leadership Amid Ongoing Conflict
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has delivered a stern warning to Russian authorities, urging them to cease hostilities in Ukraine or risk becoming targets for Ukrainian military operations. In a recent interview, Zelenskyy indicated that the lifting of range restrictions on weaponry supplied by Ukraine's allies has opened the door for potential strikes on Russian territory.
During the interview, conducted while Zelenskyy was attending the United Nations General Assembly in New York, he emphasized that Russian leaders should be aware of their safety measures. He pointed out that if the conflict continues, they may need to take refuge in bomb shelters.
Zelenskyy disclosed that Ukraine possesses combat drones capable of traveling distances of up to 3,000 kilometers (approximately 1,864 miles). Notably, the Kremlin, which serves as the official residence of President Vladimir Putin, is situated about 450 kilometers from the Ukrainian border.
In recent days, Russia has intensified its missile strikes on various targets within Ukraine, including the capital city. This escalation has prompted Zelenskyy to highlight the strategic importance of targeting Russian energy infrastructure, labeling attacks on oil refineries as some of the most effective forms of sanctions against Russia.
The decision by Ukraine's allies, including Germany, the United Kingdom, France, and the United States, to remove range limitations on the weapons provided to Ukraine has significantly altered the dynamics of the conflict. Chancellor Merz of Germany remarked that this change would enable Ukraine to defend itself more effectively by targeting military installations within Russia.
While discussing the possibility of striking Russian targets, Zelenskyy reassured that Ukrainian forces would avoid civilian casualties, asserting that Ukraine does not engage in terrorist activities. He has consistently condemned Russian military actions aimed at civilian infrastructure and residential areas.
In the same interview, Zelenskyy addressed concerns regarding the suspension of elections in Ukraine during wartime, responding to criticisms from various political figures, including U.S. President Donald Trump. Zelenskyy clarified that his primary focus is to bring an end to the war and that he has no intention of seeking re-election once hostilities have ceased.
Trump's stance on the conflict has evolved in recent months, shifting from support for Russia's narrative to expressing frustration with President Putin due to the lack of progress in achieving a ceasefire. Recently, Trump suggested that Ukraine could reclaim all territories lost to Russia since 2014, contradicting earlier assertions that Kyiv would have to concede land to Moscow.
The ongoing conflict continues to dominate global discussions, with Zelenskyy's remarks highlighting the precarious nature of the situation and the potential for further escalation if diplomatic efforts fail to yield results.
