Fire Destroys Two Supermarkets in Zehdenick Ahead of Scheduled Closure

In the town of Zehdenick, Brandenburg, two supermarkets housed within a shared commercial complex were completely destroyed by a fire shortly before their planned closure and demolition. Emergency services were alerted to the incident around midnight, and by early morning, the blaze was largely contained. However, firefighting and cleanup operations extended into the afternoon due to remaining hotspots.

According to authorities, the supermarkets had been scheduled to close permanently within days, with demolition and subsequent redevelopment already planned. The fire broke out in the loading area of one of the stores before rapidly spreading to the adjacent supermarket, leading to the total loss of both structures. Early reports from firefighters indicate that the severity of the blaze was evident upon their arrival, with intense smoke visible from a distance. The teams focused their efforts on preventing the fire from impacting neighboring properties. Despite these efforts, the supermarkets could not be salvaged.

Approximately 75 firefighters, supported by additional personnel from the local technical relief agency, were deployed to manage the incident. The situation required the temporary closure of the Bundesstraße 109 to facilitate the emergency response and ensure public safety.

Due to the significant smoke and odors produced by the fire, local residents were promptly informed via public warning systems and advised to avoid the affected area, keep windows and doors closed, and deactivate ventilation systems. These precautionary measures were lifted later in the morning once the situation was under control and the air quality improved.
